Welcome to the History of Visual Arts I & II

This guide will assist you with discovering library resources when searching for information for your History of Visual Arts I & II class with Dr. Fournier.  It will provide the basis for your exploration of library information sources which will add to your foundation of becoming literate about searching for information.

Information Literacy

What is Information Literacy?

Information Literacy is the ability to use critical thinking skills to know what kind of information you are looking for, know how to find the information you need, know how to evaluate the information you find to determine if it is what you need and learn how to use the information properly for your research projects.  It basically consists of these components:

  • KNOW what your information needs are.
  • ACCESS the information you need.  Know where to look and how to search for it.
  • EVALUATE the information you found and determine if it is what you need.
  • USE the information properly.  Know when and how to cite what you used.
  • ETHICAL/LEGAL is to give credit to what you use and avoid plagiarism.
      

    Research Check-List

    Think about your topic.  Brainstorm with yourself!  What are some possible subject terms you could use to search for resources about your topic?  Try them.  Review your results.  Are you finding what you need?

    Here is a basic check-list of "things to do" when conducting research:

    • Obtain a RefWorks account
      Obtain a RefWorks account so that you can manage your citation information for your research project. Access tutorials to learn more about RefWorks.
    • Know about ILL account
      Use ILL to borrow materials from another library that the library does not own.
    • Search USF Libraries Catalog
      Look here for books, journals, media and other materials the library may have about your topic.
    • Search WorldCat
      Search WorldCat to identify additional resources owned by other libraries that may be useful for your research.
    • Search the Art databases
      Identify and search appropriate dance databases for your topic.
    • Search the Image databases
      Search the appropriate image databases for images of your topic if appropriate.
    • Refer to Citing Sources
      Use this page to find out information about how to cite sources using the MLA Style.
    • Go to the Writing Center
      The Writing Center offers assistance to any student who wants to improve his or her writing skills. It is a place for writers of all skill levels to take chances, ask questions, and further develop their writing abilities.
