Florida Civil Rights Oral Histories

This oral history project includes interviews with several of Florida’s civil rights leaders who were active at the height of the civil rights movement in the United States and in Florida during the 1950s and 1960s. The oral history project provides details about local, regional and national civil rights issues. Interviews were conducted by researchers at USF and other Florida universities. The Florida Civil Rights Oral History Project is an open collection, to which more content will be added over time.

Florida civil rights oral history projectSummary: Dr. Robert W. Saunders, Sr., former field secretary of the Florida National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, describes the civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s. This interview focuses on the NAACP in Florida, discussing desegregation, the Tallahassee bus boycott, Florida politics, and other subjects. Numerous civil rights leaders are discussed in detail, including Harry T. Moore, Gloster B. Current, Roy Wilkins, Medgar Evars, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Thurgood Marshall, Virgil Hawkins, and Mary McLeod Bethune.
