Florida Civil Rights Oral Histories

This oral history project includes interviews with several of Florida’s civil rights leaders who were active at the height of the civil rights movement in the United States and in Florida during the 1950s and 1960s. The oral history project provides details about local, regional and national civil rights issues. Interviews were conducted by researchers at USF and other Florida universities. The Florida Civil Rights Oral History Project is an open collection, to which more content will be added over time.

Florida civil rights oral history projectSummary: Clarence Fort discusses his involvement in Tampa's civil rights movement. Fort was head of the NAACP Youth Council, organizing sit-ins and other demonstrations. He describes some of the events that led to the end of segregation in Tampa, including the first sit-in at Woolworth's in February 1960. He also explains how he became the first African American bus driver for Trailways Bus Lines and comments on the current status of race relations in Tampa.
