Genealogy and Family History

Marriage records are useful in that they may contain valuable information not only about the individuals being married but also about other relatives.  Depending upon the state (or country) and the time period, a marriage record may contain:

• the names of the individuals being married (Note: the name given for the wife may not be her maiden name, as she may have been married before.)
• the date on which the license was obtained
• the date on which the marriage was performed
• the name and address of the person who performed the marriage (such as a minister)
• the location where the marriage was performed (such as a church or a home address)
• the names of witnesses (who may be close relatives, such as a parent, sibling, or adult child)

Marriage licenses may also be indexed in register books.

The Special Collections department of the USF Tampa Library provides access to Hillsborough County marriage records for the period 1846 to 1988.  Material for 1846-1877 and 1894-1988 is available only in printed form, while material for 1878-1893 has been digitized, indexed, and placed online.  These materials are on deposit from the Clerk of the Hillsborough County Circuit Court.
