FAQ
  • Is the library open?

For the Fall 2020 semester, the Shimberg Health Sciences Library and our West Wing study space will be open Monday – Friday, 8:00 am–5:00 pm. The Florida Blue Health Knowledge Exchange (MCOM+HI building downtown) is open Monday – Friday 8:00 am–11:00 am and 12:00-5:00 pm (call the posted number for assistance).!

  • Is the 24/7 Space open?

Our West Wing study space is currently open Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, with entry from inside the Shimberg Library.

  • Are the Group Study Rooms at Shimberg Library open?

No. The Shimberg Library is open only for individual study.

  • What safety precautions are in place at the USF Health Libraries?

It is required that everyone wear a mask that covers both mouth and nose. No eating is permitted. It is required that everyone maintain 6’ physical distancing. Some items (such as dry erase markers and headphones) are not currently available to borrow. Sani-Kits including hand sanitizer, disinfectant, and wipes are provided at various locations throughout the library. We request that you sanitize your study space at the start and end of your visit. We request that you use hand sanitizer before handling reserve materials.

  • Can I still meet with a librarian?

Yes! Submit quick questions through Ask-a-Librarian. For help with a research question or getting library resources set up for your class you're teaching, schedule an online appointment.

  • Is the library still teaching classes?

Yes! Our classes have moved online to Teams. The link will be sent to you when you register for the course. Watch out for emails to the bulletin or check the calendar for upcoming classes on Searching, EndNote, and more!

  • Can I donate books, journals, or other physical items to the library?

Physical material donations are not being accepted at this time.

  • Can I check out a laptop?

Laptops are available for checkout at both the Shimberg Library and the Florida Blue Health Knowledge Exchange. As of 9/22/20, new laptop loans will have a due date of 11/25/20 (day before Thanksgiving / end of in-person classes).

  • I have items checked out from the library. Can I renew or return them?

As of 9/22/20, we are planning to extend existing loans on laptops and books from our circulating collection through 11/25/20 (day before Thanksgiving / end of in-person classes). We will be contacting you via email once your materials have been extended. Feel free to contact us at HealthLibServices@usf.edu or 813-974-8432 if you have any questions.

  • Books may be returned to the outdoor book drop south of the Shimberg Library and adjacent to parking lot 30, returned at the Shimberg Library inside book drop, or returned to the Valerie Riddle, MD '89, Brilliance Bar at the Florida Blue Health Knowledge Exchange.
  • Laptops and SonoSims must be returned at the location where they were borrowed during normal operating hours.

Returned items may remain on your record for up to 7 days before being processed, but will be backdated at check-in.

  • I need a book or an article, but it is not available online. What do I do? 
We can mail you a book if it is available at one of the USF Libraries, and articles can be obtained via interlibrary loan (or scanned from our print collection.
