USF Shimberg Health Sciences Library

How-To Guides & Tutorials

How do I find a book?

  • Search for the book title through the library catalog by selecting Title from the drop-down menu
  • If the title contains a common concept, you may wish to use Advanced Search to add additional filters, such as author.
  • Determine whether the book is in print or electronic
  • Some books will indicate that they are part of the reserve collection. These books may be limited to use in the library or to a limited check-out period, such as 24 or 48 hours.
  • Books that are available for check-out are located on the first floor of the Shimberg Health Sciences Library and are arranged by subject with call numbers according the National Library of Medicine classification system.
  • If a book is currently checked out, you may put it on hold and you will be notified when it is available for checkout.
  • Access electronic books by clicking on the USF ONLINE ACCESS link
  • The catalog entry will indicate how many users can access the book simultaneously. Please be aware of this and exit or logout when you have completed your usage.
  • Many books will allow you to save or print a portion of the book for later use. This amount varies depending on our license and is typically limited to a percentage of the book (e.g., 10%)

How do I find a journal?

  • Search for the journal title through the library catalog by selecting Title from the drop-down menu
  • If you do not know the journal's full title (e.g, you only have the abbreviated title from the citation), you can use the National Library of Medicine catalog to find the journal's full title
  • Determine whether the journal volume you need is in print or electronic
  • If you are conducting historical research, the article you need may be in a journal in our print journal collection.
  • All the print journals are located on the 2nd floor of the library and are organized alphabetically by title, then year of publication. Both bound and unbound journals are shelved together.
  • Some journal titles and issues are available electronically.  This is particularly true for recent issues.
  • Click on USF ONLINE ACCESS from the catalog entry to access the journal issues in the library's collection
PRO TIP: If you are looking for a recent article, search USF E-Journals directly for the journal title.
