Creating and Reusing Links

When adding a link to LibGuides:

Select Add/Reorder

undefined

Select the type of link.  Most often, it will be Link.  Do not select Rich Text/HTML or Database to add anything that has a link. You will only use Rich Text/HTML to add text, such as additional description or instructions for a resource.

undefined

You will see the choice to Reuse Existing Link (or Existing RSS Feed or Existing Document/File, etc.).  Click on the appropriate choice.

undefined

Search for the link you want to add by name, such as Academic Search Premier.

undefined

If you see more than one version of the link or didn’t find one, STOP! You will now be going to the Assets Database to determine which link you need to select. If you see only one version, select it.

undefined

You will now see the information in the Asset

undefined

Click Save to reuse the asset.

This means that if any changes occur to the asset, they will automatically change on your guide.

Multiple Versions of a Resource in the Assets Database

If you see multiple versions of the resource, you’re now going to the Assets Database to find which asset you should reuse.  Go to Content >Assets.

undefined

In the Name field, search for the resource’s name (example: Academic Search Premier)

undefined

This will show you the list of assets with that name.

undefined

Find the asset with the highest Mapping Count.  You can re-order the list by clicking Mapping Count.

undefined

Note the ID# of the asset that is not owned by a librarian from Shimberg that has the highest Mapping Count.

Return to your Guide and follow the instructions starting with Step 1.  When you search for the asset, you will scroll through the list to find the one with the same ID# that you noted.

Didn’t Find Any Assets?

Go to the Assets Database to add a new asset to reuse on your guide.  Go to Content >Assets.

undefined

Select  + Add Content Item.

undefined

Select the Type.  If you are adding a database or other URL, use Link.

undefined

Fill out the information and click on Save.
