Using Libraries’ licensed materials in violation of the agreement terms can end or restrict access to entire databases for the whole university. Contact the library before or early on in your project for help understanding these agreements.
Read the terms and conditions of vendor or publisher database access and/or API tools. Make sure your use abides by those terms and conditions. If your project requires something other than what those terms allows, then reach out for permissions.
Publishers and vendors may take weeks to respond to a permissions request. Get started on this process as soon as possible. If using library collections, contact your librarian early to start an investigation into if and how you may use materials from certain vendor collections.
Some open access publishers like the Public Library of Science (PLOS) do not place any restrictions on how the articles and textual data within PLOS publications may be used. Public domain items that are freely available online through projects like Project Gutenberg or Chronicling America can also be used without restrictions.
