Using Previously Published Materials in Your ETD

Guide for graduate students who wish to use previously published articles in their theses or dissertations.

Do I need to request permissions to use my own article?

In many cases you will need to obtain permissions to reprint your own article in your ETD. The publication process for articles, proceedings, book chapters, etc. often involves signing copyright over to the publisher. This can create obstacles for students who wish to include their published article in their thesis or dissertation.

This guide serves to help students find how to obtain the necessary permissions to republish their own work and to use work created by others.  It focuses on reuse in theses and dissertations, and includes major publishers' copyright information, as well as links to publisher sites, alphabetically arranged by publisher name in the left hand navigation menu.  If you are unsure of the publisher for a journal, search for the journal title using your preferred search engine, or contact your librarian.
