Information concerning the use of copyrighted materials
The links below will help you get to the part of your publisher's policy that talks about your use of your published article in your ETD. To obtain the information you need for your permissions appendix:
follow the instructions provided by the publishers, or
if use in an ETD is specifically granted on the site, take a screenshot/print the page to include in your ETD.
All listings in the index are color coded for ease of use. Green checks mean use in an ETD is allowed without request. Yellow question marks mean you will have to submit a formal request. Red x marks indicate that use of a whole article in an ETD is not permitted. Policies are subject to change; make note of the date the policy was checked.
American Association for the Advancement of Science
The 'Permission for authors' section outlines that in AAAS's license to publish, authors are allowed to include their published articles in theses and dissertations provided proper citation is supplied. Checked 6/21/2023.
Question 15: Do I have any rights to use material that I have authored, but for which ACS holds copyright? establishes that use in a thesis is permitted subject to the conditions in the Journal Publishing User Guide. Checked 05/9/2022.
ACI requires authors to transfer copyright of their material during the publication process. However, authors reserve the right to "use all or part of this article in future works of their own such as lectures, reviews, personal websites, text books, etc." Checked 12/12/2016.
Authors may reuse the final draft of their work in a new work as long as it does not constitute over 25% of the new work. The reprinted material must contain a link to the original and the statement: "This material may be downloaded for personal use only. Any other use requires prior permission of the American Society of Civil Engineers. The Interactive Authors' Manual for Books and Papers linked on this page describes the uses authors are permitted to make of their papers without formally requesting permission, including: "include the paper in full or in part in a thesis or dissertation." Checked 12/12/2016.
In ASME Journals Digital Submission Tool: "Authors may ...display all or part of the Paper, and create derivative works in print or electronic format. ...for non-commercial purposes only...Authors must acknowledge ASME as original publisher." "Authors can include partial or complete papers of their own ... in a dissertation as long as citations and DOI pointers to the Versions of Record in the ACM Digital Library are included. ." Checked 6/6/2023.
Authors publishing with BioMed Central publish with a Creative Commons Attribution License 4.0. Copyright is retained by the authors and all copying, distribution, modification is allowed provided the original publication is cited. Checked 12/12/2016.
Default publication in Company of Biologists journals is Green Open Access. Authors may include their article in a thesis immediately upon publication providing they link to the published article on the journal site. Checked 12/12/2016.
